Trump Dismisses Tech-Driven Peace Plans, Ceasefire with Iran Falters

President Donald Trump has described the current ceasefire with Iran as being on “life support” and is contemplating the reintroduction of U.S. Navy military escorts for ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz. This move is seen as a potential response to break the Iranian blockade of this crucial maritime passage.

Trump openly criticized Iran’s recent peace proposals, labeling them as foolish, and dismissed any suggestions that he faces domestic pressure to secure an agreement. Reflecting on the ceasefire, which has been effective since April 7, Trump remarked, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He added a stark metaphor, likening the ceasefire’s status to a patient with a mere 1% chance of survival.

Last week, the U.S. presented Iran with a set of conditions aimed at alleviating tensions, primarily focusing on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. In response, Iran issued counter-proposals that President Trump swiftly rejected. Following this, Trump suspended Project Freedom, an initiative to escort oil tankers through the strait, after just over two days. This pause was intended to allow Iran time to consider the peace proposals. However, Saudi Arabia had expressed opposition, refusing to permit its airspace or bases to be used for what it saw as an escalation.

Oil prices surged once more after Iran announced no further discussions would occur regarding the blockade unless its terms were met. These terms demanded the end of hostilities on all fronts, the lifting of sanctions, the release of blocked funds, compensation for war damages, and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, firmly stated that without these conditions being fulfilled, no additional negotiations would take place.
