In light of recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, Finnish leaders have reiterated their stance on the matter. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have firmly opposed Trump’s suggestion that Greenland should fall under U.S. control. Their response came shortly after the remarks made by Trump during the NATO summit.
President Stubb emphasized that any decisions related to Greenland’s governance are to be determined solely by Denmark and Greenland itself. In a similar vein, Foreign Minister Valtonen voiced Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s territorial integrity, dismissing any notion of altering Greenland’s status through outside claims.
Valtonen further highlighted the importance of addressing Arctic security issues through established defense cooperation channels rather than engaging in territorial disputes. She pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already in discussions concerning defense cooperation, with NATO actively working to enhance security measures across the Arctic region.
Greenland, which operates as a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has become a pivotal point in discussions surrounding Arctic security, sovereignty, and regional stability among European allies.
