In a noteworthy development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are intent on overcoming past disagreements to foster a stronger bilateral relationship. This statement followed his meeting with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed during the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. Pezeshkian characterized the discussions as positive, highlighting both nations’ commitment to moving beyond historical issues and focusing on future collaboration. Furthering this regional dialogue, Iranian officials are scheduled to engage with representatives from Gulf countries and Iraq in Oman on September 14. These talks are set to address regional security matters and the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with an emphasis on fostering mutual understanding and bolstering collective security measures among neighboring countries. Notably, Bahrain has declined to participate in this upcoming meeting.
In addition to regional security, President Pezeshkian advocated for increased economic collaboration among BRICS nations. He proposed the expanded use of national currencies in trade and the development of improved financial mechanisms. Pezeshkian argued that reliance on the current global financial and trade frameworks exposes emerging economies to undue political and economic pressures. He urged BRICS members to enhance economic resilience and cooperation, while also opposing unilateral sanctions and attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Pezeshkian further emphasized the strategic advantages Iran brings to the table, including its rich energy resources and extensive transit networks. He suggested that Iran could play a pivotal role in developing trade and energy corridors that connect BRICS economies, thereby boosting economic integration and collaboration.
